I woke up too early this morning and lay in bed thinking about him. People like him are the reason I keep reading newspapers, despite the centralisation of ownership that has ruined them.
He's a remarkable person and probably has the inner strength to survive this, but I hope he's not too scared. I hope they treat him with some respect.
As is usual with Ireland, the web of connections is multi-layered. We went to the same university at the same time. Everyone knows his dad, who's a journalist too. People I know went to school with him. People I know work with his sister.
He's the same age as my brother. Works for the same organisation.
I hope it's just a ransom they're looking for and he's home safely soon.
