Why do Marks and Spencers charge less for four packaged kiwi-fruit, encased in layers of non-biodegradeable plastic, than they do for four loose kiwi fruit?

Probably because they have to hire a dozen or so trained kiwi-handlers to wrangle the loose kiwi into some sort of order. The pre-packaged ones are in a modified atmosphere consisting mostly of soporific gas.

Alternatively the non-biodegradeable plastic has a negative cost. It's a crazy world.
