Oh that's right, I'm not Canadian.
Hooray!!
I see Mary McAleese and the Irish contingent with her were amazed at how self-effacing Canadians are and how they look at their feet rather than accept a compliment.
Well, yes, that's Canader for yer.
Denis Staunton has a long article in the Irish Times today giving out about how Canadians have it all and they can't see it. He lists the enormous resource wealth of the country and medicare as two reasons to celebrate.
Then he mentions the treatment of Aboriginal peoples and the equalisation funding mess as two reasons why they might be depressed. He neglected to mention that the day before yesterday was National Aboriginal Day. He probably didn't realise. Most people here don't.
The reason that Canadians are self-effacing and depressed is because they elected a right wing idealogue as Prime Minister and now they can't get rid of him while he tears the country apart, pits rich provinces against poor and ignores the environmental issues that are starting to be a big problem here. He ripped up the Atlantic Accord (equalisation), the Kelowna Accord (aboriginal rights), and the Kyoto Accord because he can.
That's why they're all so self-effacing. They're bloody ashamed.
