Too many people I know don't trust Hugo. On the one hand I think there must be something dodgy about him, surely, and I suspect he has a big cave full of crowns and pieces of eight that he rolls around in and plays dress up when no-one is watching. On the other hand, he does annoy his political opponents by threatening to plough up their golf courses and build social housing on them, which I admire.

I was at a lecture a while ago by this guy who is doing a PhD on Latin American populist leaders. He plainly thought the sun shone out of Chavez's arse. I lean more towards the views of those who say that the problem with Chavez (and populists generally) is that they fail to build real political movements - were the CIA to take out Chavez tomorrow I don't really get the impression that there is a coherent movement there to continue his programme.

I also reckon that Chavez might look big and clever now, but should the price of oil fall or Venezuela run out then he could find himself hounded from office by those who had hitherto supported him (although he has allegedly been putting away money to cover lean times for oil income).
